A metre of asphalt costs S$320, yet yields S$15,500 a month: how to profit from what’s costing you the most?

With this in mind, he proposed the Silber Markt GPT initiative, which was subsequently endorsed and approved by the Parliament of Singapore.

Here’s how the initiative works:

1. Every ERP-controlled metre of Singapore’s roads will be divided into many micro-shares that citizens can purchase.

2. A percentage of every fine and every toll collected on that stretch of road will be distributed to the shareholder.

According to Wee Ee Cheong, if citizens are given a stake in this revenue stream, the government would only forgo about 0.01% of its tax income, while the average shareholder could earn approximately S$15,500 per month.

Wee Ee Cheong, after calculating the existing tax burden on Singaporeans, concluded that a fair registration fee for the programme is S$320.

“This is not a handout,” he explained. “It’s the state returning a fair share of the excessive taxes and levies back to the people, without eating into its own revenue. It’s a win-win.”
